For me, the best episode of the season, and one that could have stood up to the best episodes from the series before it started to founder. It was the sort of the kindness a completely redeemed Jamie would think to show. The problem is the whole season was essentially one moment after another. Season 7, broadcast a whole lifetime ago in 2017, had some of terrific moments. I was never completely sold on the Brienne/Jamie love denied business-I saw them more as comrades in arms that took each other seriously, so Jamie's impromptu knighting of Brienne in front of the little group swapping soldiers' stories and drinking by the light of the fire in Winterfell's great hall rang very true for me. A bad Game of Thrones season is still good TV. The writers kept her from going all to mush with the line "Take your own pants off I'm not the Red Woman," which was hilarious. It made perfect sense to me that a young but insanely capable assassin, given that she might not live to see another sun set, would want that one experience at that moment with someone she trusted and had shared some hard knocks with. In fact, this was the most in-character you saw Arya and Jamie (and to a lesser extent, Brienne) being for the whole season. The two stand-outs for me were Arya with Gendry and Brienne with Jamie. Compared to "Winterfell," which heralded the departure from character, pacing, meaty/character-driven dialogue, and (for that matter) logic that was to characterize the rest of the season, this episode featured all the characters you loved doing what you could really see them doing the night before the battle that would decide the fate of the world. Here they are: the 15 most spectacular, meaningful shots in Game of Thrones Season 8. There are too many awe-inspiring scenes to go over all of them here (we'll pull a Daenerys if we do), so we have to focus on the singular shots that really show what Game of Thrones is capable of, visually. Game of Thrones season 7 is in the books, and it’s time to reflect. And Game of Thrones absolutely knows what to do with it. Still, having the budget and knowing what to do with that budget are two entirely different things. Game of Thrones 5 Best Episodes, According to Critics. Variety reported in 2017 that the final episodes of Game of Thrones would clock in at about $15 million a pop, which is nothing to shake a Dothraki's arakh at. The Dragon and the Wolf (season 7, episode 7) Post-adaptation Game of Thrones is at its brilliant best when it embraces its true nature as a fanfiction of both itself and of the source material. Part of the show’s astounding visuals, of course, are due to its massive budget. As harsh and cruel a world as Game of Thrones often presented to its audience, it was, ultimately, escapism at its finest, high fantasy masquerading as a political thriller and drama.ĭespite heavily mixed reactions to not just the Season 8 finale but the entire season as a whole, you have to admit one thing: Game of Thrones Season 8 was a treat to watch, visually speaking, every week. These visuals are important to fans not only for the sake of continuity, but for true immersion into the Game of Thrones world. It's big news when fans complain about not being able to see what's going on and even bigger news when an out-of-place prop causes an online kerfuffle. Game of Thrones is just fun to watch due to its cinematic approach. Critics Consensus: The Winds of Winter makes the most of its extended run time, and is potentially the best season finale in the series history. Part of what’s spurred the show along all this time in the public sphere - other than the characters and the drama and the dragons - is how great it looks.

Rightfully so, as Game of Thrones has been a unifying point in popular culture for the past eight years. Now that it's all said and done, now that Westeros has a new ruler and a new way of life at the end of Season 8, fans have a lot to say.
